United Through Reading, a nonprofit public benefit organization, helps unite military families facing physical separation by facilitating the bonding experience of reading aloud together.

Through the program, deployed parents can read children’s books aloud via DVD for their child to watch at home. Since it was founded in 1989, over 1.5 million people have benefited from the program. Click here to visit their website or to watch a video of a child's response to the DVD!

How does the book drive work?

The Boston College Bookstore, EcoPledge and BC Reads! are working together to run a book drive from December 13 to December 20. By collecting textbooks and shipping them to Better World Books for resale, we will be raising money for the Thirst Project and the Lyndon K-8 school in West Roxbury.

The Thirst Project
will receive 10% of the sales from the textbooks that Better World Books is able to list online for resale, and BC Reads! will receive $1.00 for each book they are able to accept and list online for resale. These funds will be used to purchase library books for the Lyndon K-8 school in West Roxbury. A list of books is available below.

Not only will donating textbooks allow us to support our local community and the Thirst Project’s efforts to bring clean water to communities all over the world, but it will also keep used books out of landfills. Textbooks that cannot be listed for resale but are in good condition and are deemed appropriate will be donated to Books for Africa. The rest of the donated books will be recycled.

How can you get involved?

1.   Donate your used textbooks.
If the bookstore cannot accept your textbook, please consider donating them to our book drive!

2.
Donate 30 minutes of your time.
We need help checking the collection bins and packing books for shipping. We will be doing this at 12, 3, and 6:30 every day from December 13th to the 20th at the three different locations on campus. If you would be interested in contributing to this effort or would like to receive more information, please send us an email at [email protected].
